Ohtani wins AL ROY; Acuna takes NL honor

NEW YORK (AP) Shohei Ohtani was rewarded for a Ruthian season at the plate - and on the mound.

Baseball's best two-way player since the Babe at the dawn of the live-ball era a century ago, Ohtani was an overwhelming pick for American League Rookie of the Year on Monday despite an elbow injury that stymied his switch from Japan to the major leagues and likely will prevent him from pitching next year.

"I was just kind of disappointed I wasn't able to play a full season," he said through a translator. "I feel like every player should be able to play a full year and help out the team. So that's something I need to work on, and that's going to be one of my goals, to stay healthy for a long full season and be able to the team win from day one."

P Ryu only player to accept $17.9M offer

NEW YORK (AP) ��� Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu was the only player to accept among the seven given $17.9 million qualifying offers by their former teams on Nov. 2.

Ryu accepted the offer before Monday's deadline and is considered a signed player. He is just the sixth to accept among the 80 qualifying offers made since the process began in 2012.

Mariners deny fired exec's racism claims

SEATTLE (AP) The Seattle Mariners are denying claims made by the club's recently fired training and conditioning director, who said team management had disparaged Latino players.

The Mariners issued a statement on Monday following the social media postings from Lorena Martin in which she claimed general manager Jerry Dipoto, manager Scott Servais and director of player development Andy McKay had called Latino players "lazy, dumb and stupid, especially the Dominicans." Martin, whose title with the team was director of high performance, posted her message on Instagram and Twitter .

Verlander, Upton welcome baby girl

HOUSTON (AP) It's a girl for supermodel Kate Upton and her husband Houston Astros pitcher Justin Verlander.

Upton used her Instagram site to announce the birth of the couple's first child - Genevieve Upton Verlander - and the date Nov. 7. The site features a black-and-white photo of an infant with her hand to her mouth.

Trump: Ruth to receive Medal of Freedom

WASHINGTON (AP) President Donald Trump has announced his first recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom and they include the wife of a major Republican Party donor, the longest-serving Republican senator in U.S. history, Elvis Presley and Babe Ruth.

Trump will also posthumously recognize the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.

Retiring Utley released by Dodgers

LOS ANGELES (AP) Chase Utley has been released by the Los Angeles Dodgers so he can officially retire after 16 years in the major leagues.

The veteran second baseman said in July he would retire at season's end in order to be a full-time dad to his two young sons. He turns 40 next month.

Mariners sign minor league INF Moore

SEATTLE (AP) Infielder Dylan Moore has agreed to a one-year contract with the Seattle Mariners after splitting last season at Double-A and Triple-A in the Milwaukee Brewers' organization.

The 26-year-old gets a $10,000 signing bonus, the $555,000 minimum while in the major leagues and $150,000 in the minors. He would get a $10,000 bonus if he is picked for the major league All-Star Game.
